Each year strong, upright stems are produced with lush mid green foliage and these become topped with huge conical panicles of flowers supported on strong stems. The buds open to hyacinth-like flowers in a delicate shade of lime green, maturing to a gleaming white and lasting for weeks before flushing with delicate pink. Hydrangea 'Skyfall' makes a premium standout border plant and is equally at home in a large patio planter. The fresh blooms - if you can bear to cut them - are imposing in a vase and the dried flowerheads can be used as a permanent decoration. In fact, this variety was bred for the cut-flower market, by a cut-flower arranger, so you know that the stems will make a great visual impact. As the season progresses, the tiny pink powder puffs gradually turn golden as the pollen emerges, bringing a subtle shift of colour to the whole bush, before the blue-green leaves emerge and form a magnificent backdrop to other plants and flowers in the garden. Also known as the Fuji Cherry, this gorgeous, compact tree will burst into flower before the leaves appear in late winter / early spring each year. They start as red buds which appear to almost dance around the branches, but then open to reveal beautiful pale-pink flowers, each with a red centre. Perfect for small garden or growing in a pot on your patio, Kojo-No-Mai even provides autumn interest when its green leaves turn from green to bright reddish / orange before falling. The statuesque form of the tree is also a joy to observe on frosty mornings when a haw-frost shows it off to its very best. Kojo-No-Mai is fully winter hardy whatever the weather and grows to just 3ft after 10 years if left un-pruned, but will be happy to receive a regular trim during early summer after flowering has finished.
This fantastic architectural banana plant will create a great impact in any garden! Forming a dense bush with huge paddle fan-like leaves spreading gloriously out through the air, it will create wonderful shadows on your patio. Once established, the big leaves will unfurl as they emerge each year through the central trunk, and within 3-4 years you will have leaves over 1m long. Hailing from Japan, it loves sunshine but it is hardy to -6°C when protected with fleece over winter - outside it is frost tender and will not survive being frozen.
