By careful selection of varieties you can be sure all three parts of the tree will grow in harmony and the fruits will ripen at their natural time, giving a succession of tasty fruits across a much wider cropping window than if just one variety were grown. No need to worry about pollination either, as the three varieties on the tree will pollinate each other! This is also the perfect fruit tree for a large pot on the patio. The main tree is Williams - a classic English pear with meltingly juicy flesh that is ready in mid-September. Onto this have been grafted: Conference - the perfect all-rounder. Elongated fruit are ready to pick in October for ripening through autumn. Deliciously sweet when ripe, they are also the perfect cooking pear. Abbe Fetel - not a familar name perhaps, but widely seen in shops, imported from Italy, where it is the favourite variety. It gives medium-sized pears with an aromatic, honeyed sweetness. Pick in October. Keep cool and bring the fruits in to ripen as needed through to Christmas. Commonly known as the “Prickly Pear” cactus, this a decorative variety of Opuntia which produces the edi-ble oval-shaped yellow-red fruit. Opuntia family of cacti are known for their unusual shapes and this one is no exception. With large thorny pads and oval bulbus fruits, this is one of the more alien-looking plants in our collection. Light and Water The plant likes a sunny position and can be placed outdoors in the summer to receive more heat. However hardy this plant is, it is not suitable for UK climates. In winter, the plant likes it dry and cool, so you should bring this plant indoors during winter, or keep it indoors all year round near a sunny windowsill. It prefers di-rect sunlight to indirect light. Prickly pears are extremely drought tolerant. During the growing season don’t water newly propagated pads for the first month. After that, water every two to four weeks for the first year — twice a month in summer and once a month other times of the year/ Prickly pears prefer alkaline to neutral soil if you need to repot them. More importantly, the soil needs to drain well, as residual moisture or puddling can cause the plant to rot.

Its self-fertile, like the majority of our fruit varieties, so will crop reliably for you and needs no other tree in order for it to produce fruit. The gorgeous, sweetly fragrant pink blossom looks a picture in springtime, but ideally needs a little protection from late frosts. Ideally, plant your tree against a south-facing wall and cover with fleece when in flower in the spring; this is not to protect the tree itself, which is totally winter hardy, but to give the blossom maximum protection so it has the best chance of full pollination. The warmer the position of your tree when its in blossom, the busier the bees and other pollinating insects will be, resulting in delicious peaches for you!
