Heucheras, also known as Coral Bells, are amazing perennial plants, famed for their spectacular foliage in a huge range of colours with wonderful leaf shapes forming low growing evergreen or semi-evergreen mounds. From the 'Fox' series of Heucheras, bred by Richard and Vicky Fox at their Jubilee Cottage Nursery in Cheshire where they hold the National Collection which currently exceeds 450 varieties, 'Silver Celebration' has been bred to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the nursery. This is an incredibly attractive Heuchera, with unusually large and deeply ruffled, dark veined metallic silver leaves that have vibrant purple undersides. During the summer, a profusion of bell-shaped white flowers appear on long, upright stems above the foliage. The flowers are larger than those of most Heucheras and attract a host of pollinating insects. They're also ideal for cutting for delicate indoor displays. A handsome plant with colouring unlike any other, 'Silver Celebration' will make an impressive specimen growing in a large patio pot, or grow it in borders with other Heuchera varieties so that their foliage colours can compliment each other. These adaptable plants are happy in sun or partial shade and aren't too fussy about soil conditions, as long as it isn't heavy and waterlogged as that will cause the crown to rot. Usually evergreen, severe winters may cause leaf loss, but they'll regrow the following spring. Slowly growing into large clumps, Red Baron boasts 50cm long leaves that are green near the base turning more intensively red towards its tips. Equally at home in semi-shade as it is full sun, this grass is great for making a statement in pots or can be grown alongside perennials or other grasses in beds. If you really want to make an impact, plant it end-masse, in swathes or as an edging plant alongside a path. Dead easy to look after water it occasionally, especially in pots, and cut plants to ground level when they start to wither later in the year or before new growth appears in spring.Top Tips- These ornamental grasses are deciduous, cut back stems close to ground level from late February through to the end of March before new growth starts.Care Guide- Before planting, prepare the soil by digging over and removing any weeds. Incorporate some well-rotted manure to enrich the soil if necessary.- When planting a number of perennials, arrange them on the surface so you can see how they will look before planting.- Individually knock out each plant from its container. Look at the roots if they are circling around the compost, it is best to tease them out. To do this, push your fingers into the rootball along the bottom edge and pull. Do this in a couple of places.
