Cucumber Socrates F1 Seeds
  • £3.99

This fast-growing and vigorous variety produces plentiful crops of bitter-free mini cucumbers. An 'all female' type, they are best grown in a greenhouse or tunnel, where seedless fruits can be produced if kept free from pollinators. 'All female' F1 hybrids give the surest results, producing almost all female flowers, virtually eliminating the need to remove male flowers (male flowers are generally only produced when plants become stressed). A worthy recipient of the RHS Award of Garden Merit, this is an easy-to-grow, long-standing favourite of vegetable growers and is frequently recommended by the gardening press and consumer groups as one of the best tasting cucumbers. Its high resistance to disease extends the growing season as the plants are less susceptible to powdery mildew, which can be prevalent towards the end of summer and into autumn, when light levels are lower. The dark green, thin-skinned fruits are best cut when about 18cm (7in) long and have a pleasing nutty flavour that is far superior to shop-bought cucumbers. As well as being super fresh and juicy when picked straight from the garden, these little beauties are packed with nutrients and antioxidants - they are a good source of vitamins K, B and C, as well as minerals such as potassium and magnesium. Supplied as a packet of 5 seeds ready to sow indoors from February to May. Plant out May to June into fertile, moisture-retentive but well draining soil in a greenhouse bed or tunnel, or into good quality compost in containers or growbags for growing under cover. Harvest from July to October (cooler-grown crops from August).

Heuchera Silver Celebration
  • £9.99

Heucheras, also known as Coral Bells, are amazing perennial plants, famed for their spectacular foliage in a huge range of colours with wonderful leaf shapes forming low growing evergreen or semi-evergreen mounds. From the 'Fox' series of Heucheras, bred by Richard and Vicky Fox at their Jubilee Cottage Nursery in Cheshire where they hold the National Collection which currently exceeds 450 varieties, 'Silver Celebration' has been bred to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the nursery. This is an incredibly attractive Heuchera, with unusually large and deeply ruffled, dark veined metallic silver leaves that have vibrant purple undersides. During the summer, a profusion of bell-shaped white flowers appear on long, upright stems above the foliage. The flowers are larger than those of most Heucheras and attract a host of pollinating insects. They're also ideal for cutting for delicate indoor displays. A handsome plant with colouring unlike any other, 'Silver Celebration' will make an impressive specimen growing in a large patio pot, or grow it in borders with other Heuchera varieties so that their foliage colours can compliment each other. These adaptable plants are happy in sun or partial shade and aren't too fussy about soil conditions, as long as it isn't heavy and waterlogged as that will cause the crown to rot. Usually evergreen, severe winters may cause leaf loss, but they'll regrow the following spring. You can therefore plant this in the garden with confidence, for stunning displays for many years to come. Efflorescence, fading and differential weathering.Efflorescence is a reaction between carbon dioxide and the calcium hydroxide present in the concrete pores on the paving surface. Efflorescence itself can, over time convert to soluble saltsand will be washed away by rain. It is unpredictable but will generally disappear with the natural weathering process and time. These are natural phenomenon's that may occur through "weathering"and Bowland Stone cannot accept responsibility. This is an inherent characteristic of high quality wet cast stone products and can add to the overall patina of a landscape project.Differential weathering may occur as dark and light patches on the surface of the paving. Weathering and site conditions can cause these shade variations to appear across the surface of individual units. This does not affect the performance of the paving. Natural stone may show brown colouration as its iron content oxides. Prevention of water stainingPrior to laying, cover all paving and store in a vertical position.
