'Rubinstar' apples are a lovely, rich maroon colour, occasionally splashed of with yellow, and being related to 'Jonagold' they are big and fabulously juicy with a deliciously sweet flavour and a crisp crunch. A versatile apple, they are gorgeously tasty picked straight from the tree and also ideal for cooking, making tasty desserts. 'Rubinstar' is a mutation of 'Jonagold' and is a 'triploid' variety, meaning that it has three sets of chromosomes instead of the usual two. Triploid varieties are sterile, so they can't pollinate themselves or other apple trees. They need other trees nearby to pollinate them, not an issue if you grow more than one apple in your garden, or if a nearby neighbour does! Supplied as an established tree, 150cm (5ft) tall grown on an M9 dwarfing rootstock in a 24cm pot, growing to a height, and spread of 2.5m (8ft).
Grown to be the ideal size for growing in a pot on your patio, whilst still delivering a scrumptious crop of delicious apples, Patio 'Elstar' is an excellent choice if space is limited. Not only an impressive cropper but also an ornamental feature, you can grow tall and upright Artichoke ?Imperial Star? in rows on the allotments or as a dual purpose feature at the back of a sunny border. The flower buds are large and flavoursome, held above tall study stems during summer.
Globe Artichokes are considered a true gourmet food by many, probably because of there unusual and exotic looks. These large and architectural perennial plants are grown for their edible flower buds, but they also make great ornamentals in the garden. 'Imperial Star' is a very good cropper, even in its first year, and forms exceptionally large buds with a great taste that are ready to harvest between June and September. Any buds left on the plants will flower, looking like thistles that are a magnet for bees and butterflies. Remove the buds just before they open and begin to flower and boil or steam until tender before remove the leaf scales one by one. The scales and hearts are delicious dipped in melted butter. The plants will provide excellent crops for several seasons, but it's best to replace them ever 3 or 4 years as they become gradually less productive. Astilbes are fascinating plants with flowers completely unlike anything else it the garden. Originating from central America, they thrive is a sheltered, sunny spot. 'Astary Rose' is a smaller variety of Astilbe. This incredibly attractive dwarf perennial grows to just 30cm tall, but what it lacks in size it certainly makes up for with its exceptional flowers. Between June and August the dark green, glossy serrated leaves give rise to a mass of dense triangular panicles of soft pink flowers that look like frothy clouds of candy floss. The flowers are delightfully fragrant and 'Astary Rose' is Recommended by the RHS as a 'Plant for Pollinators' with the blooms being an irresistible magnet for bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects. The flowers are good for cutting and are certainly an unusual addition to vase arrangements. They dry well too, and provide winter interest if left on the plant, especially when there's a frost. Astilbe prefer dappled shade over full sun although they will tolerate a bright spot. Too much direct sunlight can scorch the leaves. Although not fussy about soil, they do require good drainage so that their fleshy roots don't rot. Great at the front of a flower border, they are an interesting choice as an edging plant. Also ideal in containers, try planting different varieties together for a lovely, light and foamy effect. Supplied as 3 x established plants in 9cm pots, ready to plant.
