Similar in many ways to traditional Jasmine, which has always been associated with summer, Trachelospermum jasminoides, or 'Star Jasmine', will astonish with its mass of stunning white flowers filling the air with their unmistakable, intoxicatingly rich, sweet scent between June and September. Such an incredible plant, it's no surprise that it holds an RHS Award or Garden Merit! 'Star Jasmine', is a slow growing evergreen climber that can reach 6m (20ft) in a greenhouse or conservatory but planted in the garden it is much less vigorous, growing to half that size at only 20cm (8in) a year, twining around its support. It will produce waves of gorgeous pure white, star shaped flowers with petals swept anticlockwise throughout summer, each one with the most incredible fragrance. Occasionally you'll be treated to extraordinary looking seed pods, which can be best described as looking like a pair of French beans joined together at the top. As a hardy evergreen, 'Star Jasmine' has lush, glossy dark green leaves during spring and summer which changes to rich purple for the winter, providing year-round interest. Hardy down to -5°C, it grows best in a sheltered spot away from cold winds and will thrive growing on a sunny wall or over arches, pergolas and along fences. Created by the clever scientists that have pioneered Rootgrow, these discs are formed from compressed coir fibre, which binds in both beneficial biological microbes, and balanced slow release fertiliser -giving the perfect start to all hanging baskets, planters, tubs and windowboxes. Inserted at planting, when watered each disc swells to 5 times it's size, and the beneficial microbes will start to grow, bringing the compost to life and adding all the benefits of the natrual good microbes in the soil to the confines of a basket or tub. At the same time, the fertilsier is slowly released over several months, to give the perfect start to your plants. In addition, the water retaining crystals help prevent the compost from drying out by binding water in, reducing the amount of time and effort watering in summer. Just imagine, glistening, snow-white berries in your garden at Christmas - looking like tiny, sparkling decorations. Callicarpa, also known as the Beauty Berry, is a fabulously decorative shrub, characterized by bunches of berries which brighten the autumn garden with a sparkling hue. Something a little different to the usually seen purple plant - 'Magical Snowstar' is covered in snow-white berries from October to November which contrast beautifully with the autumn colour changes of its leaves. Callicarpa also works well as a decorative addition to Christmas displays, and adds a touch of winter magic to flower arrangements in your home. Growing to around 2.5m (8ft) Callicarpa bodinieri 'Magical Snowstar' is a tightly branching shrub which colours up in the autumn, when the leaves turn yellow before they fall, revealing the perfect snowball berries. If you're keen to cut the stems for indoor displays, then it's best to wait until December for the best colour. If you're keen to incorporate white accents into your garden, then callicarpa is an ideal choice. With a high tolerance for most soil types, it's very easy to grow - Magical Snowstar needs very little in the way of maintenance, just plant it in partial shade and prune out any dead or damaged branches in the spring. The bright berries provide your home with a colourful accent - although wait until the berries are fully grown and have their full colour. Once in a vase, it is important that they are in a cool and not too sunny place to retain the best colour. They're long lasting too, keeping for more than a month once cut as long as you don't drown the stems - they're fine in just 4in of water with a drop of bleach in the vase. Blooming for up to 6 months of the year, Hydrangea paniculata 'Polestar' (R) (syn Ophelia) is a delightful hydrangea that will change colour through the year. Unique in that it will grow to just 50cm tall, 'Polestar' is perfect for container growing so you don't even need a garden to appreciate its beautiful, colour-changing blooms. The delicate blooms emerge green-white and take on a pink hue as they age, becoming pinker as the seasons progress. Coming into flower from late May and lasting well into October the faded flowers can remain on the plant right through the winter bringing extended interest across the seasons. Easy to grow and hardy right down to -25°C, this is a hydrangea suitable for anyone to grow and it will even double as a houseplant for the spring - just remember that ultimately it prefers to be outside.
