Zelkova Serrata, also known as the Japanese Grey Bark Elm, is a wonderful starting point as you enter the magical world of bonsai, a revered art form in Japan and China for 2000 years. A delightful deciduous tree with a naturally upright growing habit, peeling grey bark and serrated glossy dark green leaves. Years of highly skilled training and pruning have contributed to this elegant miniature tree, already well established in a special ceramic bonsai pot. A native of Japan and China, Zelkova is happy in a cool, bright room away from heat sources. It will also thrive outdoors from early summer where it will soon acclimatise to cooler nights and warmer days. As a deciduous tree, it will lose its leaves in the autumn, when it can be brought back indoors for the winter. Trees that have been kept indoors year-round may retain some of their foliage over winter. Bonsai need regular watering as they can easily dry out. This is especially important if your Zelkova is growing outdoors, when the small amount of compost in the pot can dry out quickly on a warm, sunny day. Regular feeding between March and September is necessary to keep it growing healthily. A light trim will be required each Autumn to perfect the tree's shape. This exotic palm is sure to turn your garden in to a tropical paradise for years to come! Tough and architectural, these palms will make a striking addition to any garden, with their spiky foliage creating vivid, dancing shadows in the summer sun. With large, deeply ridged, fan-shaped leaves that will spread luxuriously out above the triple stemmed trunk, forming an impressive canopy of bright green foliage. Commonly called Cotton Palms because of their wisps of cotton-like strands that fall from each leaf, they provide a wonderful spectacle in any setting. Despite being palms, they do need a lot of water in summer when growing, as their new leaves emerge from the centre of the trunk. Cut old leaves off at trunk as they die, and your palm tree trunk will form. Semi-hardy down to -5°C, so provide winter protection or move potted palms to shelter. Supplied as a 75-90cm tall triple stemmed plant in a 20cm pot, with short trunk. Cut old leaves back as they die, to form the trunk.

A really easy-to-grow plant, this windowsill favourite can be moved outdoors during the summer to make the most of the available sunlight and warmth, although remember to keep it out of direct sunlight for a few days until acclimatised. Some people also like to use aloe vera juice as a hair conditioner, makeup remover, or even a skin tonic, and it makes a great soothing salve for minor sunburn.
