A tall and willowy herbaceous perennial, Knautia macedonica has furry, lance-like leaves at its base topped with a succession of pastel-coloured flower-heads 3-4cm across, from mid-summer. The gorgeous pincushion-like flowers are held high on airy stems from July to September and this popular hardy perennial makes a densely flowering border plant which always generates attention with its blooms in shades of pink mauve and purple. Long-lasting and colourful, Knautia will add highlights to a mixed or herbaceous border and is a good plant for a wildlife garden, attracting a host of pollinating insects as well as birds who are attracted to its seed heads.
