Juglans regia, the English or common walnut is a deciduous, broadleaf tree with shiny, feather-like leaves and fleshy, green fruits which contain the delicious nuts. In spring, the trees produce tiny immature fruits which are wind pollinated by fat male catkins and, although trees are self-fertile, you can greatly improve yield by introducing another type of walnut. The walnuts themselves develop inside a fibrous, leathery casing which splits when the nuts ripen in early autumn. This is when the nuts are at their finest, with a softer texture and distinctive, creamy taste. If you want to store them for Christmas, you are best off drying or freezing them after removing all traces of the outer husk. These fast-growing trees can reach 30m (100ft) high and 15m (50ft) in ideal conditions, and although tend to be smaller in the UK, they're still a plant that likes lots of room to grow. Supplied as an established plant in a 22cm pot, approx. 1.5m tall, ready for planting out. Did you know... That walnuts originated in ancient Persia, where they were reserved for royalty. The best wood is at the base of the tree, so walnuts are often dug up for timber, rather than felled.Walnuts produce a growth inhibitor - juglone - that has a detrimental effect on some species of plants growing nearby and it is believed that this stops other plants growing around them and competing for nutrients - a very clever tree!
This really is a novelty plant and something different - so different in fact, we've not grown them fully either (yet!). We've located a small specialist grower in Holland who is developing ways to grow Avocados in Northern Europe and these fine trees are a great starting point. Avocados thrive in warm, humid conditions, so will need winter protection in the UK - they can grow outside on patios fine though between late May and September. They will grow quite quickly at 50cm a year and these are already pruned back, so this season will produce side branches. It makes an attractive indoor plant anyway, forming a woody trunk with pleasant glossy leaves. They usually take 5-7 years to produce fruit on a mature tree, and have fruited in UK before - indoors and out. These Avocados are so new though, you will have great fun trying growing them regardless of whether they fruit, safe in the knowledge that virtually no-one else has ever grown one! Very limitted stocks so order yours now to avoid disappointment!
It would be easy to ignore Pomegranates as a fruit that can be grown in the UK, but you would be wrong. Yes, they do need hot summers and warm spots, but will crop here, and produce spectacular flower as a bonus, so also have good ornamental value. A highly attractive feature tree with the added bonus of producing glossy, versatile fruits in autumn each year! With deep green foliage and bright orange flowers in summer, it will look great in your garden for years to come. The leathery skinned, glossy fruits ripen in the sun each summer and have a wonderful flavour. Pomegranate bushes love hot summers and your bush will thrive in a sunny spot it is perfect for a patio pot. Easy to grow and completely hardy in UK (-7-10C), Pomegranates will easily tolerate our British winters and just need those long hot summers we all look forward to, to maximise fruit yields. The fruits can be used in cooking sweet or savoury and taste great when made into refreshing, fragrant pomegranate juice! They are super-healthy and packed with antioxidants. We suggest growing in a large pot, in well-drained compost, so you can move it into protection in winter, not to protect from frost, but to get it growing as soon as possible in spring. Outdoors they are very late back into leaf, so you lose valuable growing season time. They will produce their dark orange to red flowers in July, and then set and produce small reddish orange fruits, which need to be left on the tree as long as possible in autumn to ripen. Supplied as a standard tree in a 22cm pot, 1.4m tall including pot.

A decorative shrub that can be grown outside, the pawpaw is a garden-worthy plant that will give a long season of interest. The show begins in spring, when the deep burgundy-purple, cup-shaped flowers burst from their buds in May. With an unusual form, they consist of 6 petals - 3 outer and 3 inner - giving a delightful show that always gets attention. These are followed in hot summers by oval, edible fruits that colour up from yellow to a rich ochre - think of the colour of a ripe banana. The long lime-green leaves then dominate the show, gradually turning golden-yellow before falling in the autumn. Tasting like a cross between a banana and a mango, pawpaw is said to have a sweet custard-like flavour which makes them a great delicacy - however, you're unlikely to see them commercially grown as plants can be male, female or hermaphroditic. Although they have both male and female reproduction parts, they are not self-pollinating and need pollination from another unrelated pawpaw tree. Hardy to -10°C, the Pawpaw benefits from a warm position in the garden such as a sheltered, south-facing wall where it is best grown as an ornamental multi-stemmed shrub. While plants can reach up to 8m in their native US, they're more likely to attain a modest 4m here in the UK. Supplied as an established plant in a 3L pot ready for immediate planting.
