Each bouquet is beautifully arranged by our floral designers exclusively for The National Gallery. A Wheatfield, with Cypresses is one of three near identical paintings by Van Gogh. These works were inspired by the view out the window towards the Alpilles Mountains while Van Gogh was in the St-Rémy mental asylum, near Arles. We have carefully selected the perfect combination of Morning Roses, sweet-smellng Freesias, and wheat to represent the warm colours of the dense wheat field. We chose Thlaspi for the olive trees in the distance and darker green Pistacia to represent the Provençal Cypress that towers above the rest. The blue mountains and swirling skies, which feature in many of van Gogh's fine works are symbolised by the addition of blue Agapanthus. We are proud to support one of Britain's most recognisable and treasured heritage sites, Castle Howard. This decadent arrangement is inspired by the magnificent 8,800-acre estate. Working with Castle Howard, a place like no other, we have produced an arrangement designed to impress. The picturesque grounds nestled in the beauty of the Howardian Hills lends the inspiration to pair luxury peach avalanche and sweet avalanche roses with over 2000 species of beautiful roses found in the estate rose gardens. We have utilised a use of flowers to boast colours enjoyed in the gardens with a special variety of germini, suitably coined the sing-sing. To represent the fragrant gardens, we have used sweet smelling eucalyptus, British lisianthus found in the grass lands around the Castle and English Lavender to give exquisite depth to this arrangement and to hug the delicate veronica blossoms inspired by the atlas fountain to represent the spectacular water jets. With the use of solidago used to signify the signs of zodiac, a blossom identified with the stars, we have also used four stems of majestic eryngium to represent the four tritons beautifully sculptured on the fountain. Proceeds from this bouquet will be given to Castle Howard to contribute to the continued preservation and conservation of this beautiful Heritage site and to contribute to the maintenance towards the stunning grounds, to preserve heritage to be enjoyed for many years to come.
Lavender is a classic, hardy English perennial, and this much-loved cottage garden favourite will transform your garden with colour, incredible fragrance and plenty of flower power! A proven winner in UK gardens, Lavender 'Grosso' is perfect in beds, borders and containers and is also ideal for edging a path or for planting as a fragrant hedge or garden border where its magnificent scent will delight anyone who walks past! With masses of long, slender stems, that are topped with clusters of rich purple flowers it's the perfect solution to attract bees and other beneficial wildlife into your garden. In fact, the RHS have recommended 'Grosso' as a 'Plant for Pollinators' and makes an ideal companion plant if you grow your own fruit and veg. It'll stay compact too when clipped, reaching just 90cm (3ft) tall when left to its own devices, so won't take over your garden either. Very hardy, incredibly easy to grow and drought tolerant, a top growing tip is to clip lavender back lightly after the flowers have faded in late summer. Cut the stems back by a few inches, but not so far that the stems are bare of live foliage, and plants will then have time to produce new shoots before winter dormancy. The clippings can then be uses to make fragrant indoor displays and potpourri! This drought-tolerant plant will thrive in a sunny border, container, herb or gravel gardens. If you garden on heavy clay, it is worth adding some grit to improve drainage and to open the soil up. Space plants 90cm (3ft) apart, or if growing a hedge, 30cm (1ft) apart or, 45cm (18in) for larger cultivars. Lavender can be grown in large pots, 30-40cm (1ft-16in) diameter, using a multipurpose or loam-based compost such as JI No 3, with some extra coarse grit, (up to 30%), to improve drainage, along with some controlled release fertiliser granules.
