You might know Viburnum plicatum f. tomentosum by its more common name, Japanese Snowball Bush. It's easy to see where this name comes from when, in May and June, the plant bears impressive, white flowers. However, this hardy shrub is perhaps most famous for its tiered foliage. Its green, heart-shaped leaves look lovely at the back of sunny borders throughout the summer, but come into their own in the autumn when they turn spectacular shades of red and purple. Viburnum plicatum f. tomentosum is therefore a great addition to cottage, woodland and wildlife gardens in need of some added, late season interest. Height: 3m (10'). Spread: 2m (8').
For a shrub that provides winter interest in the garden, Viburnum tinus is hard to beat. From December until April the bush is filled with scented white flowers, that are then followed by dark blue-black fruit.
Perfect for winter colour, Viburnum x bodnantense 'Dawn' produces a profusion of beautiful pink, perfumed flowers on woody stems in the middle of winter.
With big and bold round white clusters of flowers hanging from the branches in May and June, it's understandable that this magnificent shrub should be known as the Snowball Tree. The leaves of Viburnum opulus turn to shades of red and purple in autumn, making a wonderful display alongside vibrant red berries which are loved by the birds. This shrub thrives in sun or full shade, is easy to grow and maintain. Height and spread: 4m (13').
This wonderfully-shaped shrub rises up like Mount Kilimanjaro with a glorious pyramidal habit, upon which, tiers of branches bear clusters of pure white lacecap flowers in early summer. Autumn sees the leaves turn shades of orange and red with the added bonus of red berries for winter colour. Supplied in 19cm pots.
Viburnum x bodnantense 'Charles Lamont' is a superb winter-flowering shrub, producing tight clusters of highly fragrant, pale pink flowers on bare stems between November and March. The new leaves emerge in spring, bronze-tinted at first and gradually fading to green. Easy to grow and fully hardy, Viburnum x bodnantense 'Charles Lamont' is an upright shrub that is ideal for low maintenance gardens and mixed borders. It has been awarded an RHS AGM for excellent garden performance, and its fragrant blooms also make a wonderful cut flower. Height: 3m (10'). Spread: 2m (6.5').
Snowballs in summer? With big and bold round white clusters of flowers hanging from the branches in May and June, it's understandable that this magnificent shrub should be known as the Snowball Tree. The leaves of Viburnum opulus 'Roseum' turn to shades of red and purple in autumn, making a wonderful display. Unlike the species, this variety is sterile so it wont produce berries. This shrub thrives in sun or full shade, is easy to grow and maintain, and holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit. Height and spread: 4m (13').
Viburnum x globosum 'Jermyns Globe' loves the UK climate, and grows well on chalky soils and heavy clay soils and even in coastal areas that can prove difficult for many other plants. Loose branching clusters of scented white blooms appear from pink buds in spring, nicely complementing the gleaming, evergreen foliage. The fading blooms are followed by shimmer, metallic blue berries. Viburnum x globosum 'Jermyns Globe' is easy to grow, making an ideal bushy shrub or small tree. Grow it as a free-standing shrub alongside cottage garden favourites, or plant as a hedge. Height 2.5m (8.2'). Spread 3m (10').
Viburnum tinus 'Lisarose' is one of few shrubs that flowers in winter, between December and April, so it is an excellent choice for providing colour when so much of the garden is dormant. It has evergreen foliage and creamy white florets open from deep pink buds, on compact flowerheads, which are then followed by shiny black fruits. It is an ideal shrub for wide borders in larger gardens, especially those with a woodland setting. Planted in a line, Laurustinus makes a lovely hedge. Height and spread: 3m (10?).
A gloriously green and pleasant flower, viburnum is known for its bushy heads and hardy stems. We believe it’s a great left-field choice for anyone considering sending flowers to friends or family.
We like to bring our customers plants that we call 'good-doers', and this lovely Viburnum certainly is that - combining four distinct periods of garden interest in one easy-to-grow hardy shrub. Awarded the Best New Plant at RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2015, 'Kilimanjaro Sunrise' erupts into flower, with tiered layers of white lacecap blooms in April and May - giving rise to its sometimes used common name of the Wedding Cake Tree. These age a lovely blush pink, often with many overlapping tones on the plant at once. This is followed in summer by bright red berries, which help feed the birds and other wildlife, before it surprises you again with a smaller autumn re-flowering. Then, in a final blaze of glory, it sheds its bright autumn leaves, as it hibernates in preparation for another year of garden thrills. Supplied as an established plant in a 3L pot., Viburnum Sunrise is a compact growing shrub at just 2.5m (8ft) tall and 1.5m (5ft) wide after 7-10 years, it makes a lovely mixed border specimen.
A real gem for winter gardens, producing long lasting floral displays from late October through winter into spring. Clusters of really fragrant, pale to deep pink, long-lasting flowers just seem to keep going and going in winter! A compact shrub at 2.5m tall or so after 10 years, it is easy to manage, and very hardy once established. Some flowers may get frost damage in extreme cold, but new ones appear quickly, and the plant is unharmed. Preferring a sunny spot, it can be grown in large pots. Because of its stunning fragrance and winter displays, plant it close to where you can smell it and see it regularly!
