Sometimes called split rocks or pebble plants, living stone plants are extremely drought-resistant and are widely popular in low-water gardens in desert regions. Lithops are fascinating little succulents. The living stone plant is very sensitive to the seasons of the year but can live for decades. Lithops have no true stem and much of the plant is beneath the soil surface. All that’s visible above the ground’s surface is usually a pair of fleshy, succulent leaves that look like stones, with a crevice between them. These leaves have window-like cells on the leaf surfaces. These transparent areas are filled with calcium oxalate, which creates a reflective facet that increases light penetration. They can be grown both indoors and outdoors, but outdoor growers should be careful that they don’t get too much water. They thrive in desert condition with infrequent moisture and intense sunlight. Therefore, mimicking Lithops growing condition is important to keep them healthy. Light and Water Indoors you can keep them anywhere from direct sunlight to partial shade. Be very careful, when growing living stones, not to overwater. These little succulents do not need to be watered in their dormant season, which is autumn to spring. During spring to summer, the trick is to water only when the soil is thoroughly dry (test by inserting a wooden skewer into the soil, and check if it's moist when removed). When you do, drench it and allow it to dry completely before watering again. If you feel like you need to water a little bit due to any signs of shrinkage in the leaves, its best to do a little at a time and in the mornings so it can evaporate if its overwatered.

Incorporate some well-rotted manure to enrich the soil if necessary.- When planting a number of perennials, arrange them on the surface so you can see how they will look before planting.- Individually knock out each plant from its container. Look at the roots if they are circling around the compost, it is best to tease them out. To do this, push your fingers into the rootball along the bottom edge and pull. Do this in a couple of places. Vinca minor 'Illumination' or Lesser Periwinkle is a versatile low maintenance plant that offers so much. Because of it's trailing habit and low height it makes the perfect ground cover solution. The variegated evergreen foliage will romp over sunny banks or beneath trees in either full sun or shade and will also provide delightful violet-blue periwinkle flowers from late spring to autumn. These grapes originate in Sicily, where the old plants were dug up from the commercial fields and potted up - so they feature marvellous thick stems already and have a history of productivity! Naturally, grape vines are vigorous climbers but when trained into a bonsai form, the Vitis vinifera makes a much more compact shrub with a thick, heavily patterned trunk, with bunches of grapes hanging in decorative clusters. Grape vines are easy to care for and grow, needing just regular watering and feeding and a sunny position. Best grown outside spring to autumn, before being moved into a cooler room over the winter. Plants are self-fertile, and the grapes are ready to be picked when ripe in late summer to early autumn - the grapes are not affected in any way by the size of the tree. To maintain its shape, the grape bonsai should be pruned in early winter with a sharp pair of snips. Supplied as an established red grape plant in a 15cm pot, plants will grow as tall as you let them, but we recommend keeping them to a maximum 1.4m.
