Bamboos can often strike fear into the heart of gardeners, as some are invasive, but fear not, this little bamboo is a very well behaved garden guest. Fargesia is one of the best types, as it is short, and has many small canes, and a much more delicate appearance than more thuggish members of the family. The best green bamboo there is, Bisset's Bamboo has risen to popularity in the last few years as it is one of the easiest, cleanest and most straightforward of bamboos. It is vigorous and slowly invasive, so best in large pots, or with plenty of space in lawns, but if you are planting near a wall or foundations, remember to use a physical barrier. Here's the perfect place to start if you want to cultivate your own Bonsai and enjoy this ancient and fascinating horticultural art form. In it's natural state the Chinese Elm - Ulmus parvifolia often reaches 25m tall yet this specimen - already 7 years old - has been trained by skilful cultivation into perfect miniiature form.
