One of best red-skinned shallots available, 'Red Sun' is renowned for its superior flavour, high yields and good storage quality after harvesting. The rotund, slightly elongated bulbs have firm orange-brown skins with flushes of burgundy beneath, and solid, juicy white centres. Shallots generally have a milder, more subtle flavour than onions, and 'Red Sun' is no exception. Its mellow yet slightly spicy taste, along with its superbly crisp texture, means it is perfect for eating raw in salads and sandwiches and is an ideal candidate for pickling. Use in stews and other savoury dishes in place of onions for an interesting twist - add them whole to your cooking for that extra flavoursome 'bite' to your cooking. Easy and rewarding to grow, shallots will thrive in most garden soils when planted in a sunny position. Shallots grown from sets will mature faster, be more vigorous and produce more plentiful crops than those raised from seed. The bulbs will swell and divide through spring and summer, giving as many as 6 or 8 new bulbs from each set to harvest from July to September. The green foliage is also tasty in summer salads, but use sparingly to make sure of the best bulb harvest! Supplied as 15 sets of planting bulbs. Ideally plant them as early as you can from February to April for cropping from mid-summer to early autumn. After lifting, clean and dry them, and store them in a cool, dry place indoors for using when needed; they will keep well and often last through to spring.
'Cristo' is a softneck type garlic that has an intense but subtle flavour and elegant aroma - perfect for a wide variety of savoury dishes whether used raw in salad dressings or for cooking. Originating in France, this variety is well suited to the UK climate, producing large bulbs with papery white skins, with about 12 or more plump white cloves in each. Unlike hardneck types, softneck garlic doesn't produce flower stems but will mature sooner and usually has a milder, although interesting flavour. Softneck garlic also has better storage properties - up to 3 months or more in good condition after harvesting. The garlic that is most commonly sold in supermarkets is softneck - but don't be tempted to propagate shop-bought garlic as it will be more prone to disease and crop far less efficiently than plants grown from these superior horticultural quality bulbs. A worthy recipient of the RHS Award of Garden Merit, 'Cristo' is easy to grow and a reliable cropper - ideal for gardeners of any experience. Traditionally, garlic is planted on the shortest day of the year (21-22 December) and harvested on the longest (20-22 June), although it can be planted in the autumn or spring. Autumn plantings will produce earlier crops and although winter hardy, may benefit from protection from the cold - or can be grown in a greenhouse or tunnel. If planting in the spring, just wait until the frosts have gone before placing the cloves in the ground. 'Cristo' will thrive in a sunny spot in most well-draining soils. If your soil is heavy, prepare the plot in advance by digging in some well-rotted manure or garden compost (avoid using fresh manure) and also some sand or grit, to improve fertility and drainage. Alternatively, grow in good quality compost in raised beds, trugs or containers. Garlic doesn't take up much room, making it an ideal choice for small-space gardening. It is a good companion plant for roses and other plants or vegetables that are vulnerable to greenfly as its aroma will help to repel those little beasts! Supplied as 2 bulbs ready to split into approximately 12 cloves for planting. Grows up to 60cm (24in) height by 15cm (6in) spread.
'Germidour' is one of the most satisfying varieties of garlic you can grow, producing lovely large and compact bulbs with white, papery skins that are attractively streaked with pinky-purple. It has a mild, subtle flavour and delicate aroma - perfect for a wide variety of savoury dishes whether used raw in salad dressings or for cooking. Originating in France, this worthy winner of the RHS Award of Garden Merit is well suited to the UK climate, being virus-free and a reliable cropper with bulbs that typically contain about 10-12 succulent cloves. The whitecurrant is very similar to its cousin, the redcurrant. However, whereas the redcurrant can be a rather tart, the whitecurrant is much, much sweeter whilst retaining a noticeable zing to its taste. As the name suggests, the fruit of 'Summer Pearls White' really does look like perfect little translucent pearls with a pale golden sheen, and they're deliciously sweet, juicy and tasty too! A perfect accompaniment to cereals and desserts or eaten straight from the bush, it's in cooking that these vitamin packed currants come into their own. They're so incredibly sweet that no added sugar is needed when making jams and pies. Best harvested by picking entire strings, they're absolutely delicious and long lasting in the fridge and freezer. Whitecurrants can be easily trained as cordons and espaliers against a wall or fence and are extremely attractive garden plants. Although they produce the sweetest tasting fruit when grown in full sun, they also do well in partial shade. So easy to grow, hardy and vigorous, cropping reliably whilst requiring little care. Years of breeding have created this unique raspberry. Bred to be compact and ideal for growing in patio pots and requiring no support, it produces scrumptious medium-sized golden yellow fruits from mid-July and through the summer. Although 'Summer Lovers Patio Gold' is classed as an autumn-fruiting raspberry, once established it will start to bear fruit in the summer from the middle of July - 3 weeks earlier than most raspberries. This is a primocane variety, meaning it will bear fruit on new wood, therefore you'll get fruit in the very first year instead of having to wait a year as you would with traditional raspberries. Easy to maintain, it requires just a little prune to simply remove old canes once they are older than 18 months and that's it. Easy to grow and look after, this raspberry can be grown and picked without problem in small spaces, in the garden, on a balcony or terrace, as they reach less than a metre. Supplied as an established plant in a 9cm pot, reaching H80cm x W50cm.
