A French lavender, Lavandula stoechas 'Greek Mountain' is a impressive, relatively new variety with upright stems up to 60cm tall (2ft) and narrow, very aromatic grey-green leaves. The large, fragrant purple flower heads are held on straight stems in late spring and throughout summer. The flowers are topped with long, deep lilac bracts that look like butterfly wings or bunny ears - hence its common name of bunny ear or butterfly lavender. The silvery leaves and blooms are packed with a heady scent, the purple flowers will provide you a colourful spectacle from early to mid-summer and are a magnet to bees, butterflies and other beneficial creatures, which will have your garden buzzing with life. Bell shaped flowers in pinkish-white open from May to July, but 'Big Berry' really starts to put on a show in autumn, when it covers itself in large, aromatic, bright scarlet fleshy berries 10mm across. This display lasts through the winter, so you'll really appreciate the colour during the darker months. Gaultheria prefers partial shade over sun, and will do well in full shade too, so it'll perform fantastically brightening up those dull spots that all gardens have. The soil should be neutral or a little acid, so us ericaceous compost especially when growing in pots. Supplied as an established plant in a 13cm pot, ready to plant out. Imagine growing your own Cranberries for the Christmas spread, well it's much easier than you think. They are tough, rugged little berries, that like naturally acidic soils - think scrubby moorland, so if you give them this, they are easy. This means most people need to grow them in pots, in acidic (ericaceous) compost, and you will be fine. They are quite a trailing plant, so choose a tall pot, or even a hanging basket, so the ripening red fruits can cascade down the sides.
