Juglans regia, the English or common walnut is a deciduous, broadleaf tree with shiny, feather-like leaves and fleshy, green fruits which contain the delicious nuts. In spring, the trees produce tiny immature fruits which are wind pollinated by fat male catkins and, although trees are self-fertile, you can greatly improve yield by introducing another type of walnut. The walnuts themselves develop inside a fibrous, leathery casing which splits when the nuts ripen in early autumn. This is when the nuts are at their finest, with a softer texture and distinctive, creamy taste. If you want to store them for Christmas, you are best off drying or freezing them after removing all traces of the outer husk. These fast-growing trees can reach 30m (100ft) high and 15m (50ft) in ideal conditions, and although tend to be smaller in the UK, they're still a plant that likes lots of room to grow. What could be better than growing your own apricots right outside your patio door? Our dwarf patio apricot has been grown especially that in mind. In spring, as early as March, beautifully scented pale pink blossom appears, filling the air with fragrance. Acer shirasawanum 'Moonrise' is a compact, deciduous shrub with a loosely-rounded habit, grown primarily for its decorative leaves - although winged red fruits develop in late summer and can be seen swirling to the ground as they ripen in autumn The palm-shaped leaves are sharply-toothed and emerge bright-red when young, maturing to a fresh yellow-green before turning orange and red in the autumn - making a colourful kaleidoscope of colour in the garden. We were blown away when we saw these simply beautiful Living Willow sculptures - combining fabulous designs with easy care gardening, for amazing garden impact. Superb as a garden feature plant, each sculpture is hand-made, so varies slightly form pot to pot, from living, but dormant Willow stems, skilfully woven into stunning designs. Once planted inot the pot, they begin to root away, and then in Spring produce a crown of leaves on top. The overall effect of a stunning trunk effect, and leaves on top creates a magical look. Grow them on into larger pots, or plant direct into the ground, over a number of years, the individual stems gradually grow into each other and merge into one exotic lattice trunk. They are reasonably straight forward to care for over rmany years. Cut back top growth hard in early Spring, then try to shape 2 or 3 times in Summer. Remove any leaves that occasionally appear on the bare stems. NB: Heights quoted are height of stems above pot, before leaves grow. When the willow is first planted you can't water it enough! Keep well watered until it has formed a good clump of root.
Just imagine this lovely holly in your garden, where it will add a new dimension to the classic patio standard tree, giving you interest all year round. Blue Maid is a female variety of blue holly, producing masses of tiny, white flowers in spring that are followed by bright red berries in autumn if you have a male holly nearby. Its leaves are less spiky than other hollies and have a distinct contrast between the light green underside and deep blue-green upper. Easy to grow and virtually maintenance-free, they just need a slightly acid, fertile soil and regular watering for the first couple of years. Because the branches of this holly tend to hold onto their leaves much better than other varieties and also as these standard plants grow less vigorously than younger plants, you get a really dense head which is why they make such amazing topiary specimens. Grow as a specimen tree in pots and border to add height, or grow a number as an unusual hedge. For extra wow factor, grow in pairs in large pots either side of porches or doorways and gates. Very hardy and tough, and with excellent tolerance to British winters, Blue Maid will withstand temperatures to -27°C without any damage and requires almost no maintenance each year apart from an annual trim to keep to shape.
