Box hedging has been the staple plant for formal garden hedges across the UK for many hundreds of years. But lately, the emergence of box blight (a disease causing dieback), and box tree caterpillar (Cydalima perspectalis) has led to the search for more robust alternatives for some parts of the UK where these have become a problem. Fortunately, along comes Ilex crenata, and more particularly the selection 'Green Hedge'. Despite its common name of Japanese Holly, the leaves are not prickly, and are small and round, very closely resembling Buxus (Box) - almost identical in fact - although probably a darker green if anything. It is equally easy to trim and thrives on a regular pruning as a hedge, yet is more robust and a little more vigorous in growth. For quickest establishment of dwarf hedges plant this size out all year round at 20cm (8in) spacing. Use in the same situations as you would box - smaller low hedges to separate areas, acts as borders, lining paths etc. However, is also vigorous enough to produce larger topiary too if allowed to grow to its full size. Photinia 'Little Red Robin' is a very popular, vigorous evergreen shrub, which boasts glossy, bright red leaves, which give a spectacular display in spring and summer. The leaves gradually change through a mix of oranges, purples and bronzes, maturing to deep dark green. The newest shoots retain a dark red glow all year. It produces clusters of small white flowers in spring, sometimes followed by red fruit - but it is the bright blood red spring foliage that really sets this hedging shrub apart. The colour is really intense and unusual, especially so early in the year, and being evergreen, has year round interest. A great and versatile choice for a low growing shrub for hedging, or as a stand alone plant. Grow in full sun for best red foliage colour and it will glow on those long summer nights. Hornbeam is very similar to Beech, it retains many of its leaves through winter although it does lose a few more leaves than Beech. Hornbeam has green leaves in spring which give way to coppery leaves in winter, retaining its leaves all year round. Yew is an English native, and forms superb, dense hedges from 1m to 3m or more, providing excellent screening, almost total shelter from wind and weather and excellent privacy. An evergreen conifer that is easy to manage, it grows at 20-30cm a year, quicker than many people think. It responds well to frequent trimming, yet can be cut just once a year in late summer too. Although plants can grow very large (they are trees after all), by planting them close and clipping every year, you can maintain them at a very respectable height.
