The fabulous centuries old gourmet French Fig, 'Rouge de Bordeaux', produces the most amazing deep red purple fruits, with an almost violet metallic luminescence about their skins. A late cropping variety, best grown in a pot, it will thrive in a Sunny spot in a smaller pot for root restriction, which encourages bigger fruit crops and less leaves. It will do even better in a conservatory or greenhouse too, as the extra temperature will produce more, larger and sweeter fruits. Self-fertile, so no pollinators needed. Fully hardy, but crops better in warmer locations. Pick fresh in early September, the sweet, juicy red fleshed Figs contrast with the purple skins. A real delight for fig lovers everywhere.
What's not to like about easy-to-grow Kiwi fruits, which can crop reliably outside here in the UK? The variety 'Jenny' is tried and tested as one of the best performers in UK gardens and is 100% self-fertile. This gets round the problem most people have had, as you typically needed a male and female variety to get crops, and then some bees to pollinate too. That, however, is now in the past! Grow against a sunny, south facing wall, 'Jenny' is quite vigorous, and can reach 3-4M in 5 years if not trained or pruned. The good news is it responds well to trimming and shaping, and should produce fruit in 2-3 years reliably, and heavy crops beyond that, surprisingly easily. Juicy, fresh and rich in Vitamin C, the fruits can be picked in Autumn, and are delicious eaten fresh - quite different to supermarket fruits chilled and transported across the globe. The seeds themself are very soft which makes them very easy to eat and have been describes as virtually seedless. Easy to grow and great in a pot on the patio, pomegranates like a rich soil with plenty of grit and gravel for good drainage. The Kaffir or Thai lime, Citrus hystrix, is one of the main cooking ingredients in Asian dishes, and makes an attractive plant with its fragrant, glossy green leaves and powerfully perfumed blooms. Everything about this stunning citrus bush is quite distinctive. The leaves look like two leaves joined together, with one growing from the tip of the other. Just wait until you taste the difference between shop-bought and your own home-grown leaves - you will never go back to shop-bought! Picking the leaves every few weeks may help encourage growth and crushing the leaves will release the fragrant oils and an intense citrus aroma. The leaves can be used fresh off the tree, or dried or even frozen to retain their intensity. Naturally compact, the Kaffir lime tree is a little smaller than other citrus plants, reaching just 150cm (5ft) tall with a bushier top, but is easily kept as a small plant for continual harvesting of leaves. Mature plants may also produce fruits, which are little knobbly powerhouses of flavour as the Kaffir lime peel is loaded with fragrant citrus oil, which gives a pleasant tingle when eaten. Kaffir limes are easy to grow, just needing a slightly higher winter temperature than other citrus, ideally above 12C (54F). During the summer, plants benefit from spending time outside in a well-draining container on your patio, decking or balcony, and then brought back under cover before the first frosts of winter. Alternatively, grow the Kaffir lime in a well-lit conservatory, a bright room or a heated greenhouse. A strong, bushy plant is supplied in a 9cm pot. It flowers from May to August, but both blooms and fruit (when produced) can be on the tree at any time of the year.
