Without doubt, one of the most impactful and beautiful perennial plants you can grow, the simply huge and striking two-tone flowers of Peony 'Bowl of Beauty' are a Spring joy to behold. A zingy, tasty collection of delicious, flavour packed chilli peppers that pack a real punch. Chillies get hotter as they age, and their heat is measured in Scoville Heat Units (SHU). The higher the SHU, the hotter the chilli. Grown in pots in a warm, sunny spot such as a patio or porch, or indoors as a houseplant in a bright area, these superstars will produce wonderful chillies from July that are about 15-25cm long and delicious eaten raw, used in recipes or added to barbeque skewers to give them a blast of heat. With their intense indigo blue colour and sweetly fragrant perfume, Bluebells boldly herald the arrival of Spring and the onset of warmer weather. You can now create your own carpet of these pretty woodland favourites in your garden. Simply plant them in a shady spot at the base of a hedge or around the base of a tree where they will naturalise just like in the wild. 'Batter' is a top performing leek variety with outstanding hardiness. Cropping from late autumn to early spring when the vegetable garden is decidedly bare, it boasts long, straight pale shafts of densely packed stems which rise to form thick, dark green leaves. Easy to grow and with excellent resistance to pests, these leeks are also particularly tolerant of the fluctuating moisture and temperatures of the British winter, standing well throughout the coldest, wettest months. They can be left in the ground until needed, although once picked they will keep for up to 3 weeks in the fridge. Little care is required and they left to themselves until you're ready to harvest them. Whether picked early or left to mature, this versatile veg has a lovely sweet and mild flavour and a firm but tender texture when cooked. Use young baby stems in salads and stir fries and mature leeks for a great variety of dishes including soups and stews. Evergreen trees that suit the British climate are few and far between and this is a perfect example of one that will give all-round interest. With shiny, deep-green, leathery leaves, pretty cream autumn flowers and colourful fruit, the Strawberry tree deserves to be far more widely grown. This is an easy tree to grow anywhere and suits coastal regions too. It grows steadily, forming a nicely proportioned medium-sized bush, which is covered with lustrous foliage throughout the year. In autumn you'll enjoy panicles of creamy bell-shaped blooms, which are not unlike Lily of the valley in appearance and are are particularly welcome as winter approaches. The orange-red, globe-shaped fruits ripen in autumn from the previous year's flowers, giving the whole tree a very decorative look at this time of year. Fruits are edible but sharp-tasting when raw so best left on the tree for their ornamental value - although they can be used in preserves. Emerging like bright yellow stars from the soil, at the same time as snowdrops, Aconites herald the start of lengthening days in the garden. What a cracker this lovely peony is, and a one off too. It's an Intersectional Peony, a hybrid between traditional perennial varieties and the tougher tree peony, combining beauty, colour and robustness in one, also known as an Itoh Peony after Dr. Toichi Itoh. Created in 1986, Paeonia Itoh 'Bartzella' produces beautiful lemon-yellow flowers with frilly, ruffled centres and unique magenta streaks at the petal base. This created quite a stir at the time, with an individual root selling for over $1000.00! Fortuantely now much more affordable, Bartzella quickly forms a neat mound of deep-green foliage that acts as the perfect backdrop for its giant flowers, this superb peony with flower its socks off in April and May, and even into June. What's more, the blooms carry a wonderful lemon-citrus scent which is a joy on those sunny spring days! Long lived and easy to grow, this fully hardy peony is especially vigorous with sturdy flower stems that don't require staking - making them exquisite cut flowers. Being a perennial, each autumn Bartzella retreats underground, only to emerge bigger and more floriferous next year. Perfect in mixed borders in sun or light shade, it's not a plant that enjoys the confines of a pot for too long - if you must grow them in a container, use a large one and after a few years unpot the plant and relocate to a bed or border. Plants will produce dozens of flowers when happy and because they grow wide rather than high, they are an excellent choice for a border hedge, with a wave of flowers which add to the overall planting scheme. Consider growing them in several groupings of three or more at intervals along the length of a flower border for an early wave of romantic colour tones.
