With its large, voluminous flowers, this Azalea welcomes the spring with its extravagant display of rich pink trumpet-shaped-blooms, which have a throat speckled in magenta and almost completely cover this neat, compact shrub. Also, the small, densely packed, glossy dark evergreen leaves make this is a hansdome shrub all year round. Happy in sun or light shade and perfect for growing in containers - where it'll make a striking addition to doorways, terraces and balconies - but also happy in the flower borders. Just the thing for bringing a bold mass of colour to the spring garden! Azaleas are easy to care for, needing little maintenance or pruning. This is a fabulous new colour addition to the amazing Bottlebrush family. No prizes for guessing where they get their name from - their classic spring flowers zing with intense colour. Usually red, this is the first widely available pink, and what a neon-pink it is too! Each flower is made up of thousands of thin stamens, each pollen rich, so become a mecca for bees and butterflies early in the season. Flowering in spring and early summer, it is great to attract early season pollinators to fruit - and sometimes has a mini flush of flowers again in autumn. Grow in a pot in a warm and sunny spot, in a well-drained mix. A half-hardy shrub, give winter protection in colder, windier spots, as early leaves and growth can be damaged.
This exotic deciduous tree comes to life in late-spring with the emergence of wonderful, fern-like foliage - and reaches a crescendo of colour in mid-late summer when the incredible, fluffy, bright pink flowers cover every branch - each one carrying a lovely fragrance! Also known as the Pink Silk Tree, Albizia Rosea is ideal as a feature plant in Mediterranean-style gardens, where the fine foliage makes a particularly attractive feature in its own right. Hardy throughout most of the UK, the silk tree benefits from planting near a south-facing wall for a little winter protection, helping it to retain its leaves for a little longer into the autumn. The dainty leaves of the silk tree slowly close during the night and during periods of heavy rain to protect itself from damage, giving it an alternative name of 'night sleeper'. In Japan its common names (of which there are several) all mean 'sleeping tree', so don't be surprised if your tree looks a little droopy at times - it's just resting! When grown as a hedge or as coppices, the new young growth is luminous with fire when the catkins break - it's really a sight to behold Perfect for a winter garden, the pussy-willow catkins start to appear from late winter and last well into the spring, and the stems are truly impressive when cut and brought into the house for an early flower display. In fact, this variety was bred for the cut-flower market, by a cut-flower arranger, so you know that the stems will make a great visual impact. As the season progresses, the tiny pink powder puffs gradually turn golden as the pollen emerges, bringing a subtle shift of colour to the whole bush, before the blue-green leaves emerge and form a magnificent backdrop to other plants and flowers in the garden. Not just a pretty face, 'Mount Aso' is also known for its abilty to tolerate pollution, salt sea air and damp areas - a truly versatile and useful plant! Nothing welcomes Spring like the swelling buds of a Camellia, it's bold & blousy flowers erupting as the days begin to lengthen. We have a lovely batch of 4 year old trees fashioned into a lollipop standard shape, with a short stem beneath the flower canopy, making it perfect for pots and larger planters. This slow growing evergreen has been skilfully cultivated with this in mind, for an elegant and unique look. Each Spring, the large buds swell up and erupt into large filled rose-pink flowers. Beware of early frosts though, the tree is very hardy, but the frosts can catch the early flower buds. Covered in huge, watermelon-pink, fluffy flowers, and a relative of the mimosa, it's not surprising that Calliandra is also known as the Powder Puff Tree. The fragrant pink blooms of 'Dixie Pink' resemble giant powder puffs and are composed of hundreds of pink stamens emerging from a white centre, which is what give them their characteristic appearance. As an added bonus, the foliage is just as attractive with the finely divided, feathery leaves emerging flushed pink before maturing to darker green. At night the leaves fold up which kids find fascinating. As a south American native, Calliandra is a definite sun lover, and best grown where it can be kept in a sunny position and moved into a greenhouse or conservatory over winter.
