In dry weather, if your plant wilts, soak the roots with a hose and the plant will usually recover, and in any case, water regularly until plants are fully established.Care GuidePlanting Advice for Hydrangea Candybelle Bubblegum:- Really low maintenance, Candybelle prefers compost-enriched soil that stays moist. It can be planted in sun or light shade.- Shrub roots generally tend to spread out rather than down, so dig a planting hole 3 x wider than the roots of the shrub you're planting and mix some well-rotted compost or manure with the soil from the hole and use this to re-fill one the shrub is in place.- We've found that a square hole is better than a round one as the new roots, once they reach the edges tend to grow in a circle round the circumference of the hole whereas when they reach the corners of a square hole, they find it easier to grow through.- Before planting soak container-grown shrubs thoroughly and allow to drain.- Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.- Add Mycorrhizal fungi to the roots when planting to help plants establish quicker.- Place your shrub in the hole at the same level at the pot.- Refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling) and firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball, then water well.- Mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.- If you're planting into pots, place some old rocks, stones or gravel in the bottom of the pot for drainage and ballast. Use the best compost you can buy and some sand or grit for drainage.Care Advice for your hydrangea:- Feed in spring to encourage flowering, our Hydrangea feed is ideal.- Keep well-watered through the year.Pruning Advice for Hydrangea arborescens:- As this hydrangea flowers on new wood, you can leave the faded hydrangea flower heads in place until the new buds begin to swell in spring this also protects the new growth from frost damage.- Just cut back the stems to a strong pair of buds. Remove any branches that are damaged or dead as well as any that are misplaced.- After pruning hydrangeas, apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant.- Once established, you can remove up to a third of the shoots to the base of the plant to encourage new stems.Planting Time:February - NovemberFlowering Time:July - SeptemberAbout You GardenEstablished for over 50 years, our award winning trusted plant supplier are based in South Lincolnshire. Zelkova Serrata, also known as the Japanese Grey Bark Elm, is a wonderful starting point as you enter the magical world of bonsai, a revered art form in Japan and China for 2000 years. A delightful deciduous tree with a naturally upright growing habit, peeling grey bark and serrated glossy dark green leaves. Years of highly skilled training and pruning have contributed to this elegant miniature tree, already well established in a special ceramic bonsai pot. A native of Japan and China, Zelkova is happy in a cool, bright room away from heat sources. It will also thrive outdoors from early summer where it will soon acclimatise to cooler nights and warmer days. As a deciduous tree, it will lose its leaves in the autumn, when it can be brought back indoors for the winter. Trees that have been kept indoors year-round may retain some of their foliage over winter. Bonsai need regular watering as they can easily dry out. This is especially important if your Zelkova is growing outdoors, when the small amount of compost in the pot can dry out quickly on a warm, sunny day. Regular feeding between March and September is necessary to keep it growing healthily. A light trim will be required each Autumn to perfect the tree's shape. Supplied ready planted, 22-25cm tall including a 12cm ceramic bonsai pot with tray.General Bonsai Tree Care: Watering your Bonsai: Because it is restricted in a small pot, your bonsai will need checking morning and evening to see if it needs watering. Keep your bonsai on its tray; this will catch the water draining through the holes in the bottom of the pot and will create some humidity around your bonsai, especially useful if you have central heating on. Don't let your bonsai sit in water as this can damage its roots.Where to put your Bonsai: During winter place your bonsai in the brightest place possible, avoiding artificial heat such as radiators. If placing your bonsai on a windowsill, keep it out of direct sunlight as they prefer cooler rooms. During the summer, your bonsai will enjoy a spell outside, just remember to keep it in a bright, sheltered position.Feeding your Bonsai: We always recommend feeding your bonsai with a specialist fertiliser - ordinary plant foods can be too strong for the bonsai and may scorch the roots. Feed once a week to once a fortnight during the spring, summer and autumn.Reduce the feeding to approximately once a month in mid-winter when it is barely growing. Yellowing of the leaves if the bonsai is deficient in nutrients. How to Prune Your Bonsai: Once new shoots have grown to about 2-3cm, using a sharp pair of bonsai scissors carefully cut back to the first pair of new leaves. Your bonsai has individual branches and you should prune to maintain the gaps between them. Prune regularly to maintain the shape - start as soon as you get your tree. During the growing season any long shoots or crossing branches should be trimmed back. This product is offered for sale for home delivery exclusively via our website only.
