If you only have space for one fruit tree, Sweet cherry 'Stella' is the one to grow. 'Stella' Cherry is self-fertile (which means it does not need a second variety of cherry tree to pollinate it) and is a really heavy, reliable cropper because it has good resistance to late frosts. Unlike most other sweet cherry varieties, 'Stella' will thrive in slightly exposed locations but can also be grown in a pot on your patio. The sweetly flavoured, dark-skinned, plump and juicy, aromatic fruits will be ready to pick from mid to late July each year and from the third growing season onwards, you can expect upwards of 5kg (11lb) of cherries per tree, which will save a small fortune compared to paying supermarket prices. Additionally, the beautiful cherry blossom, which appears from early March, will brighten your garden and mark the beginning of spring. Supplied as a bare root tall, grower-quality tree, approx. 1.2-1.4m, grown on a dwarfing 'Colt' rootstock to provide a compact and manageable habit.
'Morello' Cherry is often referred to as 'The Cooking Cherry' because it is the variety most frequently used for making the delicious fragrant pies and jams we all know and love! The fruits are packed with juice and the skin colour is dark red. It is one of the most reliable croppers of all the sour cherries because it is self-ertile, late flowering and so less susceptible to frost damage, plus it is incredibly disease resistant a real winner for any garden! 'Morello' Cherry is also a great tree to grow on a north-facing wall because even in a cooler position with low light levels it will still grow and thrive and fruit as normal you can usually expect to pick the fruits from late August onwards.
Senecio herreianus, AKA the string-of-pearls or string-of-beads plant, is a trailing, succulent vine and one of the rising stars of social media sharing! Looking just like a string of green beads, its perfect for hanging baskets or cascading from shelves - the String of Beads appreciates room to trail and is perfectly photogenic. The pea-sized leaves (which allow for the storage of water while at the same time minimising water loss) are produced on trailing stems which can grow 60-90 cm (2-3 ft). In its natural habitat, the stems trail on the ground, rooting where they touch and forming a dense mat. Each rounded leaf has a thin band of dark green tissue on the side known as an 'epidermal window' which allows light to enter and irradiate the inside of the leaf, effectively increasing the area for photosynthesis - a clever plant indeed. Senecio blooms during the summer with clusters of small white flowers with colourful stamens. The flowers last about a month and are said to smell like cinnamon and other spices to some people. Easy to grow and low maintenance, like most succulents the string of pearls will tolerate infrequent watering and just a few hours of direct sunlight every day. Good soil drainage is essential though to prevent problems and we recommend that you use a cactus mix when potting. Note Decorative pot in images is for display purposes only and is not supplied.
The dazzling leaves of Cordyline 'Southern Splendour' will add a tropical touch to your garden with their stunning colour and bold shape. The leaves are olive green with broad, bright pink edges and narrow pink stripes that look absolutely amazing, especially with sunlight shining through them, and the architectural shape makes it a great statement plant on a patio, terrace or balcony as well as in the ground. Initially the evergreen leaves form a dense clump at ground level, but eventually Cordyline 'Southern Splendour' grows to form a small, palm-like tree reaching over 3m (10ft). Evergreen and hardy to -5°C (23°F), this cordyline looks fantastic all year-round, adding colour to your garden when all else begins to fade. We do suggest though using frost protection fleeces or wrapping or bring your plant into a garage or porch during the coldest winters. Supplied as an established plant in a 17cm pot.
'Sunburst' is a good sweet cherry tree variety that performs well in the UK, producing dark red cherries in July, a week or so earlier than Stella. Not as vigorous as Stella, so more easy to manage. Self-fertile, a good all round garden cherry tree.
