The owner who was the 2nd Marquess of Rockingham, commissioned Stubbs to paint a life-size portrait of his prize horse. He excluded any reference of the rised and focused purely on the stallion against a background of pale gold, he wanted to show the horse free from human control which makes this painting even more precious.
