If you're struggling to grow orchids then give our Bletilla Lucky Dip Collection a go. This easy growing orchid is as tough as it is beautiful. Bletilla will fill your garden with delicate blooms from spring through to early summer.
Orchids are one of the most popular plants in the UK and when you see their exotic blooms, it's easy to see why. The ones that we are used to seeing are houseplants and need to be grown inside - however there is a hardy orchid that you can grow in your own garden! Bletilla, or the Hyacinth Orchid, is one of the hardiest and easiest to grow garden orchids in the UK, slowly forming clumps which produce their gorgeously detailed violet-pink flowers in early summer. When grown in light, dappled shade, bletilla is quite unfussy so it can be grown in the ground under trees, in lawns, or even in patio pots (in shade). B. striata forms a clump of attractive, ribbed, sword-shaped leaves, with erect stems bearing many violet, fragrant, orchid-shaped flowers in spring and early summer. Blooms can reach up to 5cm wide, and each has a ruffled lip in a slightly darker shade, making them a stunning addition to your garden. Although hardy to -10, we recommend growing them in a container where they can be moved to a conservatory or unheated greenhouse during winter, and in mild areas a generous layer of dry mulch should be applied in autumn to provide protection for the corms. Alternatively, lift the corms in autumn and store it in a dry, frost-free place. One thing you need to remember is that bletilla should be kept dry during their winter dormancy, as they will not survive cold, wet soil. An easy to grow plant, which if left undisturbed, will naturalise and spread out to form good-sized clumps. Supplied as 3 x established plants in 9cm pots, ready for potting on or planting out when the soil warms, plants can reach 50cm high and 50cm wide. NB - Plants are dormant October to March so there may be no leaves on your plant when delivered.

A real taste of hot lazy Summers, Bougainvillea grow freely in hot countries around the Mediterranean with their rich colours smothering walls and balconies in the hot sun, but they also make great summer plants right here too!The lovely magenta pink variety is one of the more compact and floriferous varieties, and performs well at lower temperatures in winter too. The colour comes, in fact, from bracts, not flowers themselves - a little like Christmas poinsettia. The bracts turn brightest pink in summer whereas the flower itself is quite insignificant - a small creamy flower, which looks like the eye of the bracts. These plants have been grown on a cane and are supplied with the cane in a 3L pot. Although climbers, they are slower growing in the UK. They're perfect for growing in large pots in full sun on your patio, and then in winter bring inside to protect form cold. . They can lose their bracts suddenly due to stress, so do not be alarmed if they drop - new ones will quickly re-appear in warm weather.A real tropical addition to the Summer garden!

If you want to grow something different, then this is the plant for you! The Yellow Bird of Paradise (Caesalpinia gillesii), is a bushy shrub with a profusion of snapdragon-like flowers dripping with orange-red tassels. Caesalpinia goes by several other names, including the Desert Bird of Paradise and Crimson Threadflower - which give a hint to its drought tolerance and beautiful flowers. The yellow flowers reach around 2.5cm (1in) and are extended further, sometimes by as much as 7.5cm (3in), by the showy stamens which are produced on erect stems 15-30 (6-12in) long. The blooms are a favourite with humming birds in its native South America. Rarely sold or grown in the UK, Martin discovered it on a Spanish Nursery on a trip there recently, and bought all we were allowed to. With fine feathery foliage, like an Acacia, this bird of paradise (which incidentally is not related to the Strelitzia), is borderline hardy in the UK, so we advise protecting from frost in winter. Grow it in large pots in a sunny position, and enjoy its amazing flower displays in late summer. Caesaplinia easy to care for and generally problem free - plants under glass may need a restrictive prune after the first flush of flowers.
